Without an estate plan, state law prevails which means the deceased wishes are of no concern.

When should I start making plans?

CNN Money states that it's never too early to start your estate planning. They advise that your first step is to take stock of all your assets. These include your investments, retirement accounts, insurance policies, real estate, business interests and valuable items - in financial or emotional terms - such as jewelry, cars, baseball card collections or your great-grandmother's good china.
Next, decide what you want to achieve with those assets and who you want to inherit them. This is also the time to think about people you would trust to handle your business affairs and medical care in the event that you become incapacitated.
Then, after you decide what kinds of bequests you wish to make, contact Bradford Miller Law, P.C. to help you with all your estate planning needs. We can prepare all the legal documents needed, offer advice, and keep your estate plan current with the laws governing estate planning. You will have the satisfaction of knowing that your financial affairs are in order. Young, rich and childless? You need an Estate Plan.

Beth Pinsker, of Reuters published an article today titled "Estate planning for the young, rich and childless" Her article states in part:

For many single or childless individuals, the question of how to distribute their worldly wealth after they die is wide-open and complicated. A charity? Alma mater? Distant nieces and nephews? A cat? And who will take care of making sure dying wishes are fulfilled?

When it comes to charitable planning, financial advisers say it is not about how old you are but how rich. If you have $100,000 or more, you do not want to die without a will or estate plan and leave it to a court-appointed executor to decide what happens to the assets you leave behind.

You also have to consider your health care directives and who should manage your affairs should you become incapacitated in an accident or because of illness. A person needs a line-up of contingency names to put on legal forms, and all of those people need to be aware of your desires for medical intervention.

What generally keeps people - with children or without - from estate planning is that they do not want to face their mortality.  Bradford Miller Law, P.C. can help you with all your estate planning needs. We can help you prepare all the legal documents needed , offer advice, and keep your estate plan current with the laws governing estate planning. And, you have the satisfaction of knowing that your financial affairs are in order.
